Standardized Patient

Thank you for your interest in our Standardized Patient program at Michigan State University’s Learning and Assessment Center.

Standardized Patients/ Clients are individuals who can help provide direct, hands-on patient care experiences for the students in the Health Professions Colleges here at Michigan State University. They are people from all walks of life who have a desire for a flexible work schedule, and are comfortable, after sufficient training, to "act" out the role of a patient or veterinary client. Standardized Patients/ Clients are also involved with giving responsive feedback to a student's performance during assessment events, so having a good memory and observation skills are a must. Some of the events do involve the students performing physical exam assessments on our Standardized Patients.

No previous experience is required however qualities of a great Standardized Patient (SP) include:

  • Reliable and punctual
  • Have good memory and recall skills
  • Possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work with others in a respectful manner
  • Committed to the education of healthcare professionals

Please be aware that almost all events are Monday through Friday.  Times for events are typically 7:30am-12pm, 12:30pm-5pm, or 7:30am-5pm.  Please review your availability to see if you would be available to work during these times.

It is important to note that Standardized Patients are recruited for events on an as needed basis with no guaranteed hours.
